The Owl Hears

The Owl hears that Sandy's 90th birthday was celebrated in advance on April 12 by a group of family, friends, and self-appointed representatives of Hawthorne and Cibola.  The party unofficialy continued far beyond the appointed time, with stories and reminiscences.  Many of us have thought for years that Eleanor could easily have written an encyclopedia, and Sandy revealed that she actually did work for Encyclopedia Britannica for a time -- part of a long chain of events that led to Cibola, Hawthorne, and beyond.

The Owl is back, roused from a long hybernation by the news of Sandy Orr's forthcoming 90th birthday.  Doug Orr asked us to get the word out -- Alumni and friends will help Sandy celebrate on Saturday, April 12; see details below.  We'll try to get this news out by e-mail, but please help us by spreading the word. ...That 1976 alumna Bonnie Cotier died on March 23, 2011, in a cave diving accident near Abergavenny, Wales, UK. [...more]

...That James Banks Hudson III died on March 25, 2011.  An obituary is available online at the Daily Camera, a newspaper in Boulder, Colorado.

...From Barrett Horne that there is now a Hawthorne group on Facebook.  Also that Southeastern University is apparently out of business; the future of 501 I St. S.W. is unclear.

...That Hawthorne teacher John Shortridge died after a hiking accident on Feburary 21, 2009. A memorial service will be held on March 14, 2009. [...more]

...That Betsy Reifman died on October 9, 2008 after a long struggle with breast cancer.  More at her Alumni Directory entry.

...From Grayson Mattingly: "On a recent trip to Hilton Head I was able to get a pic of the famous John Jock Rock and Roll Dreier."  Results can be seen on the Alumni News page.

...From Sandy and Eleanor: "We are sorry to report that Joe Cate of the Santo Domingo Pueblo in New Mexico, class of 1965,  died on Saturday, February 10 [2007] at 10:00 A.M.  We were last with Joe on August 4, 2004 when we were at the Pueblo for its ancient annual tribal corn dance when the men and women of the pueblo dance in age-old formations from early morning to sunset.  John Shortridge and Denise Fort joined us that night for dinner at Joe's house. 

"Upon hearing of Joe's death, we went out to be with his family for the traditional four days of food and tribute while according to tribal belief Joe's spirit remained at the pueblo before his journey to his new home.  Joe became a famous maker of fine jewelry with many of his works displayed in museums.  He appeared at Indian gatherings throughout the country where his jewelry was sold.  We will miss him."

...From Sandy and Eleanor: "We are so very sorry to report that Alex Rode died Friday, December 15, 2006. He had a massive heart attack while on the operating table. As many of you know, Alex remained so marvelously buoyant from his wheelchair after losing both of his legs. How grateful we are to have had such a wonderful time with him at the Grand Reunion in 2005."

...That Ken Wyner, class of 1969, and Hawkins Biggins exhibited their photography at The Culture Shop, 341 Cedar Street N.W., Washington, D.C.  The show is opened June 17-18, 2006.  Ken writes "Hawkins & I will be having a little showing of images from around the world----Afghanistan/Ireland/Spain/St Marten/Morocco/Hawaii/Canada/Mexico/India & more. We will be there at a wonderful shop filled with exotic fair trade items from all over the world, priced unbelievably. & if that is not enough we will have wine, cheese & Turkish pistachio, as well as Ken & Hawkins speaking in multi lingual tongues................ love to see you all there......& pick up something original, from another culture for Fathers day!"  For more information, call 202-726-2211.

...That paintings by Cora Cronemeyer, class of 1961, were included in "Mosaic Inner Realms", a showing at Amsterdam Whitney Gallery,  511 West 29th Street, Chelsea, New York, NY 10001, October 7 to November 1, 2005.

...That Blanche Gardner, remembered fondly by those who studied German and Latin with her at Hawthorne over many years, died on Thursday, August 25, 2005.  See the Memorial Page for more information.

...That the Grand Reunion (August 5 through 7, 2005) was a great success, and more about it will be heard and seen on this web site in the near future.

...That in late June Doug Hamilton read his story about Jim Hagen at an arts festival in British Columbia.

...That John Daniel gave readings from his new book Rogue River Journal: A Winter Alone on May 10 at 7 P.M. at Chapters in Washington, D.C., and on May 24 at 7 P.M. at the University of Oregon Knight Library Browsing Room.  If the Owl hears of other stops on the tour, those will appear here as well.

...That Larry Snitzler presented a program of music for classical guitar on March 30, 2005 at 8:00 PM, at the Harold and Sylvia Greenberg Theater, 4200 Wisconsin Avenue, N.W., Washington D.C.  According to an audience member, "it was wonderful."   (If you would like to hear about Larry's future concerts, ask him to add you to his "E-Gram"
